Lake Tarawera holds an impressive number of very large Rainbow Trout, many of which reach and exceed the magical 10 pound mark. With an abundant food source within the lake, Tarawera rainbow trout rapidly reach some of the most impressive sizes of any in New Zealand or indeed the world.
While most of the fishing on the lake is done by boat there are some excellent opportunities for the shore based angler within walking distance from The Landing. The Te Wairoa stream mouth and The Orchard reserve are both popular areas for early morning winter fishing.
